The hens at Lefty’s Place have been rescued from caged egg farms, from free range egg farms, from barn laid egg farms, from backyards and from abattoirs before they were scheduled to be slaughtered. Every one of these hens arrives in a state of shock, they are unable to work out what is happening to them or why it’s happening….until they set their feet on earth that is. The ground, the earth and the sky are part of chickens, their soul is entwined with the energy of the earth. On their first day of freedom, most new rescues will have their first dust bath and their first sunbake. After all that time trapped in cages and sheds, their complete relief and recognition of who they actually are when they step on to the earth is magical. To trap these intelligent birds in such misery just so we can eat eggs is cruelty of the highest form. Please enjoy the Lefty’s Place hens jumping for joy and read their accompanying stories.

Oda Mae Brown and Sweetness – Jumping For Joy
Oda May Brown (the hen in the air) was given to an animals shelter when her owners were going overseas. She was lucky to find a place to let her live out her days without the pressure of being solely and egg machine.
Sweetness was rescued from a cage egg farm in 2013. We found her huddling alone in her cage. Why she was alone we don’t know, but her cage mates had probably died one by one.
Both these girls are now happy. They are free.

Rosemary – Jumping For Joy
Rosemary was rescued from a cage egg farm in 2015. We chose Rosemary as we walked through that cage egg farm because she had pushed her body as far as she could through the bars to look at us. She was desperate to come with us, and so she did.
These days she is a happy, gentle, people loving hen. She is free.

Extra Speckley – Jumping For Joy
Rescued from a cage farm in late 2011, Extra Speckley grabbed on to her new life with gusto. From her first day of freedom she was unstoppable.

Cruskit – Jumping For Joy
Cruskit was rescued from an abattoir in 2016. She was completely bald, terrified and stuffed in a crate ready to be slaughtered at sunrise. She had spent her whole life in a cage egg farm before she arrived at the abattoir. Her life had been misery. She was seen as less then nothing.
These days Cruskit is one of the cheekiest little ladies I know. She bites me when she gets the chance. She chest bumps hens she doesn’t like. She run, she jumps and she lives her life to the absolute full.
She is free.
