I knew Buster for 9 years and for all of those 9 years he saw me as that pesky woman who pushed in on his great friendship with his owner J. He resented me but he learnt to live with me, eventually.
Buster was part Jack Russell, part Corgi and part cheeky bugger. J found him wandering around a service station with no collar one afternoon many moons ago. He took him home and started looking for an owner to this cheeky dog. No one ever came forward to claim him, so he just settled in as J’s dog and his name become “Buster”.
Buster and J become inseparable for the next 17 years. A dog and his person, a person and his dog. Buster learnt to live with the sheep and chickens and even in his older day, had the best hearing of any dog I’ve known.
Buster left this world in June, 2015. J made the painful decision to have him put to sleep. Buster had got to the point where he could no longer walk, see, hear or eat. The cruel thing about loving a dog with all your heart is having the knowledge that one day you have to live without them.
Sometimes I still think I hear him grumbling to himself in the next room. Sometimes I think I see him in the corner of my eye. I don’t think he’ll ever leave his person fully. I think he’ll wait for J forever.
