Often in battery egg farms, we find hens walking around on the floor, out of the cages. We call them “floor girls”. How do those girls get out of the cages? We think they are taken out by workers who think they look ill. Perhaps the hens struggle and the workers drop them and then they just leave them to walk around the shed floor with no water to die.
There are floor girls dead throughout the sheds and the alive floor girls are so hard to catch, but we really try because they are guaranteed to die, but we often fail because they are quite fast.
We found this sweet girl perching on the food tray in front of the cages. She was rescued. I named her “Clover”. She was so very lucky to be a floor girl on the night we came by.
That night Marigold and Rosemary were also rescued from that farm and all three now enjoy their days at Lefty’s Place.
Clover is a sweet little hen who loves to explore and completely and utterly LOVES a good warm mash with oats. Rosemary is her best friend and they can be seen exploring the paddocks of Lefty’s Place together daily.
